Subhash Ghai Opens Up on Bitter Salman Khan Fallout Before 'Yuvvraaj'

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has recalled a confrontation with Salman Khan that took place before the two eventually worked together on the 2008 film Yuvvraaj. Speaking about their relationship, Ghai said the incident occurred at a party where an argument between the two escalated after the actor, according to the filmmaker, had been drinking. The disagreement reportedly became heated and eventually led to a physical altercation between them.

Ghai said the disagreement began after he objected to something Salman was saying during the gathering. According to the filmmaker, Salman questioned some of his decisions and the conversation turned into an argument. Ghai said he reminded the actor that decisions regarding a film were ultimately the director’s responsibility. The exchange then became more intense, with Ghai recalling that Salman abused him before the situation developed into a spat.

The filmmaker said Salman’s father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, intervened after learning about the incident. Ghai recalled that Salim Khan contacted him the following morning and told him that he had reprimanded his son over what had happened. He then asked Salman to visit Ghai’s residence and apologise. The filmmaker said Salman followed his father’s advice and came to meet him personally.

Ghai said Salman apologised politely when he visited his house, an act that changed his feelings towards the actor. The filmmaker said he was particularly impressed by Salman’s respect for his father and decided to put the incident behind them. Their relationship subsequently improved, with the two beginning to visit each other regularly. The earlier disagreement was eventually left behind as they rebuilt their personal and professional relationship.

Their reconciliation ultimately led to a professional collaboration in Yuvvraaj, which was directed by Ghai and starred Salman alongside Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. Although the film was made several years after their disagreement, Ghai’s recollection presents the project as an outcome of their decision to move beyond the earlier confrontation. The filmmaker has since spoken about the incident as part of the history of his association with the actor.

Ghai, widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s prominent filmmakers, has directed several successful films during his career, including Meri Jung, Hero, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Saudagar, Pardes and Taal. Salman, meanwhile, has established himself as one of Hindi cinema’s leading actors through films including Maine Pyaar Kiya, Judwaa, Wanted, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. Their collaboration on Yuvvraaj came after the personal conflict had been resolved.
