Actor Sunny Deol has admitted that portraying Lord Hanuman in the upcoming film Ramayana is one of the most challenging roles of his career, saying he is only at the beginning of the journey and has a long way to go before he can truly embody one of India's most revered mythological figures. Speaking at the film's promotional event, Pratham Sankalp, held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital on July 18, the veteran actor said the responsibility of bringing Hanuman to the big screen is immense because of the deep emotional and spiritual connection millions of people have with the character.
Addressing the gathering, Sunny Deol said he has completed only a small portion of the film's shoot and believes it is too early to claim that he fully understands the role. The actor acknowledged that Hanuman is not a character that can be portrayed through physical appearance or action sequences alone. Instead, he said the role demands patience, preparation and a deeper understanding of the qualities that have made the deity one of the most respected figures in Indian mythology. "To tell you the truth, I have done only a little work on the film so far. I still have a long way to go," he said.
The actor also expressed gratitude to the filmmakers for entrusting him with such a significant role. He said he considers it a privilege to portray Lord Hanuman and promised to dedicate himself completely to ensuring the performance reflects the values associated with the beloved deity. "I am grateful that I received the opportunity to play Hanuman ji. I will make every possible effort to portray him in the right way," Sunny Deol said, adding that he hopes audiences will appreciate the sincerity and commitment he brings to the project.

Explaining why the role is particularly demanding, Sunny Deol said Hanuman represents much more than extraordinary physical strength. According to the actor, the character embodies devotion, humility, courage, wisdom and selfless service, making the portrayal emotionally and spiritually complex. He noted that balancing these qualities on screen requires more than conventional acting and demands a genuine understanding of the character's significance in Indian culture. This, he said, is what makes playing Hanuman a far greater challenge than many other roles he has taken on during his decades-long career.
Ramayana is among the most eagerly awaited Indian film projects, with expectations running high because of its ambitious scale and star-studded cast.
