Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota, aged 28, and his brother André Silva, 26, a professional player for Penafiel, tragically died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, early Thursday. The crash occurred at 12:30 am on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, when their Lamborghini suffered a tire blowout while overtaking, veered off the road, and burst into flames, according to the Spanish Guardia Civil. Emergency services, including the Zamora Traffic Police and Fire Brigade, confirmed both deaths at the scene.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound grief, stating, “Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all, with an infectious joy.” They requested a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain. Liverpool FC, devastated by the loss, pledged support to the families, requesting privacy for Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he married on June 22, and their three children.
Jota, a key figure in Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title win, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances since joining from Wolverhampton in 2020. He also won the FA Cup (2022) and League Cup (2022), and helped Portugal secure the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. André, a youth player at Porto, played in Portugal’s second tier.
