With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to be the largest edition in the tournament's history, data analysts have begun projecting the most likely contenders for football's biggest prize. According to simulations conducted by sports analytics firm Opta, Spain has emerged as the leading favourite to win the tournament, edging out traditional powerhouses such as France, England and Argentina in the race for the title.
The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada and will feature an expanded 48-team format for the first time. The competition will include 12 groups of four teams, with the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed sides advancing to a newly introduced Round of 32. The expanded structure will result in a record 104 matches, making the tournament longer and more complex than previous editions.
To assess the likely outcomes, Opta's supercomputer reportedly simulated the tournament 10,000 times. Spain emerged as the most successful team across those simulations, winning the World Cup in 16.1 per cent of scenarios. The projections also highlighted Spain's consistency, with the national team reaching the quarter-finals in 52.1 per cent of simulations, the semi-finals in 39 per cent, and the final in 25.6 per cent of all projected outcomes.

The model suggests that Spain could enjoy a favourable path through the group stage, where it is expected to compete against Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. According to the simulations, Spain topped its group in more than three-quarters of all projected scenarios, reinforcing its status as the tournament favourite heading into the competition.
Despite Spain's leading position, France, England and Argentina remain among the strongest challengers. France was assigned a 13 per cent probability of winning the tournament, followed by England at 11.2 per cent and Argentina at 10.4 per cent. The simulations indicate that Argentina and England are likely to dominate their respective groups, while France faces a comparatively tougher group-stage challenge against Norway, Senegal and Iraq.
The forecasts underline both the opportunities and uncertainties created by the expanded World Cup format. While Spain currently leads the projections, analysts caution that knockout football remains highly unpredictable. With 48 teams, additional knockout rounds and numerous possible pathways to the final, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be one of the most competitive and unpredictable tournaments in the history of international football.
