Former England fast-bowling great Stuart Broad has hailed Virat Kohli as potentially “the most important cricketer ever,” praising the Indian star’s relentless drive and consistency following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) back-to-back Indian Premier League (IPL) titles at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets, chasing 156 with 12 balls remaining, with Kohli playing a pivotal role in the win. The former India captain anchored the innings with an unbeaten 75, guiding his side to a comfortable finish and cementing his influence in yet another high-pressure final.

Speaking on the “For the Love of Cricket” podcast, Broad said Kohli’s list of achievements across formats and leagues over the past decade and a half places him among the most impactful figures in modern cricket. He highlighted Kohli’s leadership record and trophy haul, noting successes including the Under-19 World Cup as captain, multiple ICC Champions Trophy wins, an ODI World Cup triumph, a T20 World Cup victory, three years holding the World Test Championship mace as captain, and now two IPL titles.

Broad argued that Kohli’s sustained excellence in a constantly evolving cricket landscape sets him apart, suggesting that his influence extends beyond statistics and into shaping the modern competitive mindset of the game. He added that Kohli’s consistency in high-stakes matches reflects an exceptional level of mental strength and motivation.

Drawing parallels from other sports, Broad compared Kohli’s IPL journey to golfer Rory McIlroy’s long wait for major championship success.
