Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane announced his decision to step down as captain of the Mumbai cricket team on Thursday, citing the need to groom a new leader for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, starting October 15, 2025. The 37-year-old, with 14,000 runs in 201 first-class matches, will continue as a specialist batter, aiming to help Mumbai secure more titles. Mumbai faces Jammu and Kashmir in their opening match.
“Captaining and winning championships with Mumbai has been an absolute honour,” Rahane posted on X. “With the new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader.” Under his leadership, Mumbai clinched the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, defeating Vidarbha, ending an eight-year drought. Rahane also led Mumbai to the 2024-25 Irani Cup victory against Rest of India and the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, solidifying his legacy as one of India’s finest domestic captains.
The move has sparked speculation about successors, with names like Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur circulating, as noted in posts on X by @CricBuzzIndia. Rahane’s decision aligns with Mumbai’s transition, with 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre captaining the team in the ongoing Buchi Babu Tournament. Despite stepping down, Rahane’s commitment to Mumbai remains strong, with @CricFanatic tweeting, “Rahane’s focus on batting could see him shine in his 19th first-class season.” His leadership exit marks a pivotal moment for Mumbai cricket.
