Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has defended the decision to not hand teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his senior India debut during the recently concluded T20I series against Ireland, saying the youngster gained valuable experience despite remaining on the sidelines. Ashwin's remarks come after India suffered a surprising 0-2 series defeat, prompting calls from fans and experts for Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the playing XI.
The absence of the highly-rated batter became a major talking point following India's disappointing performances in the two-match series. Many believed Sooryavanshi could have provided a fresh spark to the batting line-up, especially after the team's struggles against Ireland. However, Ashwin argued that rushing the youngster into international cricket may not necessarily have been the right decision, particularly given the pressure surrounding the series.
According to Ashwin, the public narrative could have been entirely different had Sooryavanshi made his debut and failed to make an impact. He said young players often face intense scrutiny at the international level, and a poor outing could have resulted in unnecessary criticism at an early stage of the batter's career. Ashwin stressed that managing expectations is crucial when nurturing emerging talent and that patience often benefits both the player and the team.

The veteran spinner also pointed out that Sooryavanshi's time with the senior squad was far from wasted. Observing experienced international cricketers from close quarters and understanding how they respond to pressure provides invaluable lessons that cannot always be replicated in domestic cricket. Ashwin said watching teammates make mistakes, adapt their approach and handle difficult situations offers a significant learning opportunity for a young cricketer preparing for the next level.
Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of India's brightest young prospects after impressing with his fearless batting in age-group and domestic competitions. His rapid rise has generated considerable excitement among fans, many of whom are eager to see him represent the national team. However, selectors and team management have continued to adopt a measured approach, focusing on his long-term development rather than accelerating his transition to international cricket.
Ashwin's comments reflect a broader philosophy of gradually integrating young talent into the senior setup instead of exposing them to immediate pressure. While India's defeat to Ireland has intensified the debate over team selection, the former spinner believes Sooryavanshi's experience of training alongside established internationals and learning from their successes and mistakes will prove beneficial when his opportunity eventually arrives. The youngster is widely expected to remain in contention for future series as India continues to build its next generation of players.
