India began their Sri Lanka tour on a positive note, securing a six-wicket victory in the three-day warm-up fixture on Sunday. The match, originally scheduled as a four-day contest before being shortened, provided the Indian team management with valuable information ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, beginning August 15. Devdutt Padikkal's performance at No. 3 and Gurnoor Brar's impressive showing with the ball emerged as two of the biggest talking points from the game.
Padikkal strengthened his case for the crucial No. 3 position with a composed contribution during the warm-up game. With India still assessing their batting combination following Sai Sudharsan's injury setback, Padikkal's ability to handle the responsibility in the middle order could prove significant. His performance offered the team management a clearer option for the position as India prepare to finalise their XI for the opening Test.
The bowling department also produced an interesting selection talking point, with Gurnoor Brar making a stronger impression than Prasidh Krishna. Brar's performance gave the management another option to consider as they assess the pace attack for conditions in Sri Lanka. While a warm-up fixture does not necessarily determine the final playing XI, the performances of players competing for places can influence selection decisions, particularly when the team is dealing with injuries.

India's preparations had already been complicated by concerns surrounding Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill. Sudharsan, who was carrying a niggle, was eventually ruled out of the entire Sri Lanka series. Gill, meanwhile, suffered a hand injury and was unable to participate in the first two days of the practice game. His return to action during the contest provided some relief for the Indian camp ahead of the Test series. India's chase of 207 was ultimately made to look straightforward. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill and Rishabh Pant helped India reach the target with four wickets in hand during the final session on Day 3.
Their contributions ensured that the visitors finished the shortened contest on a winning note and gave the batting group useful time in the middle before the more significant challenge of Test cricket. The warm-up victory therefore provided more than just a confidence boost for India. It offered indications about the team's batting order, pace-bowling options and the fitness of key players ahead of the Galle Test. With the first Test only days away, Padikkal's claim at No. 3 and Brar's performance against more established pace options are likely to remain among the key selection discussions within the Indian camp.
