Former Australia batter Michael Hussey is considering an offer to join England’s Test coaching staff after Stephen Fleming informally approached him about becoming the team’s batting coach. Fleming, who recently took charge as England’s red-ball head coach, has a long association with Hussey through Chennai Super Kings. The pair have worked together for nearly 15 years, first as colleagues during Hussey’s playing days and later as part of the franchise’s coaching setup.
Hussey confirmed that Fleming had sounded him out about the possibility of taking up the batting coach position, although he stressed that no decision has been made. The former Australia international said his close relationship with Fleming was one factor he would consider. However, he also acknowledged that the prospect of coaching England against Australia in the Ashes would feel unusual, particularly with the next series scheduled to take place on English soil in 2027.
The 51-year-old also said that family commitments would play an important role in determining whether he accepts the position. A full-time role with England would involve significant travel and extended periods away from home. Hussey has previously worked with England, serving as a consultant during their successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Australia. His familiarity with the team’s setup could make a potential return relatively straightforward.

Hussey said his approach to coaching is not primarily influenced by national loyalties. He explained that his focus is on helping players improve regardless of which country they represent. That perspective could allow him to work with England without viewing the role as directly opposing Australia. However, coaching England during an Ashes series would still represent a significant professional and personal departure for a former Australian Test star.
Hussey also expressed confidence in Fleming’s ability to lead England’s Test side. He described his longtime CSK colleague as a thoughtful coach who understands how to balance competitiveness, relationships and enjoyment. According to Hussey, Fleming is likely to retain England’s attacking approach while bringing greater control and decision-making to the team’s style after recent criticism that the side sometimes played too aggressively.
England are preparing for a new phase under Fleming, with Joe Root returning as Test captain. The team’s first major assignment under the new coach will be the winter tour of South Africa, while the 2027 Ashes against Australia will provide a much bigger test. If Hussey eventually accepts Fleming’s offer, his presence in England’s coaching staff would add an intriguing dimension to one of cricket’s most intense rivalries.
