A food safety complaint has triggered an investigation in Rajpur town of Kanpur Dehat after a consumer allegedly found a dead baby rat inside a packet of branded Khatta Meetha namkeen. The packet, priced at Rs 80, was reportedly purchased from a grocery shop located along Mughal Road by Javed Khan, a resident of Nai Basti. The alleged discovery has raised concerns over the safety and quality of packaged food products and prompted the Food Safety Department to examine how the animal could have ended up inside the snack packet. According to Khan, he had purchased the packet of namkeen for children from the local grocery shop. He said he opened the packet outside the shop and began eating the snacks when he noticed what appeared to be a dead baby rat among the contents.

The discovery reportedly shocked him and drew the attention of people present near the shop.  Khan alleged that the animal was inside the packet when he opened it, raising questions about possible contamination during the manufacturing, packaging, transportation or storage of the product. Khan said he could have faced serious health consequences had he consumed the contaminated food without noticing the animal. He subsequently raised the issue with authorities and demanded that the Food Safety Department conduct an immediate investigation. He has also sought action against the manufacturer and the shopkeeper if the investigation establishes that food safety regulations were breached.

The consumer's complaint has brought attention to the need for proper quality control at different stages of the packaged food supply chain, from production and sealing to transportation and retail storage. The complaint has now reached the Food Safety Department in Kanpur Dehat, which has initiated a probe into the matter. Officials have sent a team to investigate the alleged contamination and determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery. The authorities are expected to examine the packet and its contents as part of the investigation. They may also look at details related to the purchase and storage of the product to establish whether the alleged contamination occurred before the packet reached the shop or after it was delivered to the retailer.

Determining the condition of the packaging will be an important part of the investigation. If the packet was properly sealed and showed no signs of tampering, investigators may need to establish how the alleged animal entered the product during manufacturing or packaging. Officials could also inspect storage conditions at the shop and examine other packets from the same product batch, depending on the findings of the initial inquiry.

Any confirmed presence of a foreign animal or other contaminant in a packaged food product would raise serious concerns and could prompt regulatory action. Until the inquiry is completed, the allegation that a dead baby rat was present inside the branded namkeen packet remains unverified.
