The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 player auction is tentatively scheduled for December 15, with organisers strongly favouring an Indian venue for the first time since 2023, according to a Times of India report published Sunday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly finalising logistics for the mini-auction, which will follow the November 15 deadline for franchises to submit retention lists of up to six players. Unlike the previous two mega auctions held overseas—in Jeddah (2025) and Dubai (2024)—the board aims to bring the high-stakes event back home to maximise domestic broadcaster reach and fan engagement.
All ten franchises are in overdrive finalising core squads amid a flurry of trade rumours, including blockbuster swaps involving Ravindra Jadeja, Sanju Samson, and Dewald Brevis. The retention window has already sparked heated debates, with former players warning teams against dismantling proven combinations. Sources indicate the BCCI may announce the official venue within a week, with Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad emerging as frontrunners due to existing infrastructure and five-star hospitality capacity for over 400 players and officials.
The December 15 date falls strategically after India’s white-ball tour of England and before the senior team’s departure for the Boxing Day Test in South Africa, allowing key stakeholders to attend in person. Unlike mega auctions, the 2026 event will feature a smaller purse—estimated at ₹120 crore per team after retentions—and a reduced right-to-match card allocation, making strategic trades crucial. Overseas venues had been preferred recently to accommodate global broadcasting partners, but domestic pressure for a “home auction” appears to have prevailed.
