India suffered a dramatic middle-order collapse against England in the second One-Day International at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff after a promising start, with fast bowler Jofra Archer producing a match-turning spell on Thursday. After steady half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer had put India in a strong position, Archer struck at crucial moments to leave the visitors reeling at 205/7 after 39 overs. England, who won the toss and elected to bowl first, fought back impressively to seize control of the contest.
Virat Kohli anchored the Indian innings with a fluent 65, registering another ODI half-century before falling to Archer, while Shreyas Iyer continued to hold one end with a composed fifty. Earlier, Rohit Sharma failed to capitalize after receiving an early reprieve, departing for 26, while captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 31 after getting off to a promising start. Their inability to convert starts into substantial scores prevented India from fully capitalising on a solid platform.
The turning point came during Archer's second spell, when the England pacer dismissed Kohli before striking twice in two deliveries to trigger a dramatic collapse. India, who had looked set for a total well above 280, suddenly found themselves struggling as wickets fell in quick succession. England's disciplined bowling attack, supported by tight spells from the rest of the pace unit and effective fielding, shifted the momentum decisively in the hosts' favour during the middle overs.

Despite the collapse, Shreyas Iyer remained at the crease and attempted to rebuild the innings alongside the lower order. India pinned their hopes on the vice-captain to guide the team towards a competitive total in the closing overs. Every additional partnership became increasingly valuable as England maintained pressure through disciplined bowling and regular breakthroughs, restricting India's scoring opportunities during the latter half of the innings.
India also made one change to their playing XI before the match, with wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul ruled out because of illness and Ishan Kishan taking his place. The three-match ODI series carries added significance as both teams continue to fine-tune their combinations ahead of upcoming international assignments. England entered the Cardiff encounter looking to level the series after India's convincing victory in the opening ODI, making Archer's outstanding spell a timely boost for the home side.
