Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the iconic former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), dismissed rumors of being a behind-the-scenes decision-maker after passing the leadership baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad last year.
Speaking to JioStar following CSK’s thrilling four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in their IPL lung-opener on Sunday night at Chennai, the 43-year-old emphasized his focus on reinventing his game to remain relevant in the ever-evolving T20 landscape.
Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL titles before stepping down in 2024, highlighted the shift in batting dynamics. “Batsmen are now willing to take risks with proper cricketing shots—big strokes, reverse scoops against pacers, sweeps, you name it. I’m no different; I have to adapt too. That’s what’s required where I’m batting. You have to stay relevant,” he said.
Reflecting on the evolution of T20 cricket, he noted, “The way we played in 2008 versus last year is worlds apart. Wickets were two-paced back then; now, they’re batter-friendly.”
Addressing speculation about his influence post-captaincy, Dhoni clarified his role under Gaikwad’s leadership. “Ruturaj’s been with us for years—calm, composed, with a great temperament. I told him before the tournament, ‘Take my advice if you want, but you don’t have to.’ I stay out as much as possible,” he said. “He made 99% of the calls—bowling changes, field placements—all his. I just helped out. He’s done a brilliant job.”
Dhoni also opened up about his bond with Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli, describing it as a friendship rooted in mutual respect. “It started as a captain-player dynamic, but over time, we became friends. Even now, there’s that line of respect, though with neither of us captaining, we get more time to chat,” he shared.
The Jharkhand-born cricketer praised the IPL’s regional commentary initiative, particularly enjoying the energetic Bhojpuri feed. “It’s like old-school radio—full of life. Commentary gives you fresh ideas to evaluate with data and strategy,” he said. As CSK gears up for another season, Dhoni’s focus remains clear: adapt, contribute, and let the new guard shine.
