England white-ball Captain Harry Brook has publicly apologised for his involvement in a nightclub altercation in New Zealand, admitting that his actions were “not the right thing to do” and acknowledging that he has learnt from the incident. The apology comes days after the episode drew criticism and disciplinary action from cricket authorities.
The 26-year-old batter was involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington on the night before a one-day international match. Following the incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) fined Brook £30,000 (approximately $40,000), citing a breach of conduct standards expected from a senior international player.
Speaking to reporters in Colombo, where England are set to face Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series starting Thursday, Brook expressed regret over the episode. “I’ve learned from my mistakes,” he said, stressing that the incident does not reflect the standards he aims to uphold as captain of the white-ball side.

The controversy also coincided with a disappointing on-field performance. England went on to lose the ODI in Wellington, with Brook managing just six runs, adding to scrutiny around his leadership and conduct off the field. The timing of the incident, on the eve of an international fixture, further intensified criticism.
Brook, however, sought to draw a line under the matter, emphasizing personal accountability and a commitment to moving forward. He indicated that his focus is now firmly on cricket and leading England responsibly during the upcoming series.
The ECB’s swift disciplinary action and Brook’s public apology underline the importance placed on professionalism and behaviour, particularly for players in leadership roles. As England begins their Sri Lanka tour, Brook will be keen to shift attention back to performance and ensure the episode remains a learning moment rather than a defining one.
