Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has weighed in on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) announcement of a Rs 131 crore reward for the team’s recent Men’s T20 World Cup victory, giving a verdict that has surprised cricket fans.
In a recent interview, Harbhajan acknowledged the enormity of the reward but emphasized that such incentives, while significant, should not overshadow the dedication, teamwork, and strategic planning that led to India’s triumph. He noted that players’ efforts on the field are the real drivers of success, and financial incentives are only a secondary acknowledgment of their achievements.
The BCCI had announced that the entire prize pool, amounting to Rs 131 crore, would be distributed among players, support staff, and management. This includes individual bonuses for players based on performance, reflecting the board’s recognition of both individual brilliance and collective effort.

Harbhajan also suggested that while large rewards generate public excitement, they can create unnecessary pressure or expectations on players in future tournaments. According to him, focusing on consistent training, skill development, and team cohesion is more important for sustaining India’s dominance in cricket.
The cricketing community has responded with mixed reactions. Many fans praised Harbhajan for highlighting the importance of discipline and teamwork over monetary gain, while others debated whether such high financial incentives are justified given India’s status as a cricket powerhouse with substantial commercial revenues.
Harbhajan’s comments add a measured perspective to the discourse around rewards in cricket, reminding both fans and players that on-field excellence remains the core of any championship, regardless of the scale of monetary prizes.
