Gujarat Titans suffered a heavy 99-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Monday, with captain Shubman Gill attributing the loss largely to the team’s ineffective bowling rather than the batting collapse. Chasing a challenging target of 200, Gujarat were bowled out for just 100, registering one of their most disappointing performances of the season.
Mumbai Indians put up a strong total of 199 for 5 after being put in to bat, driven by an outstanding unbeaten century from Tilak Varma, who scored 101 off 45 balls. Despite an early breakthrough provided by Kagiso Rabada, who picked up three wickets in the powerplay, Gujarat’s bowlers struggled to control the game in the middle overs, allowing Mumbai to regain momentum and finish strongly.
After the match, Gill highlighted that conceding too many runs in the middle overs proved to be the turning point. He observed that the pitch was slightly slow and felt a total between 160 and 170 would have been a competitive target. However, inconsistent execution and failure to maintain disciplined line and length enabled Mumbai to post a significantly higher score.

Gill further explained that the team found it difficult to adapt to the surface, which offered variable bounce and required precise bowling. He admitted that Gujarat failed to consistently hit the right areas, which allowed Mumbai’s batters to capitalize. The skipper also noted that conditions remained largely similar in the second innings, with a bit of dew possibly making batting slightly easier.
In reply, Gujarat Titans’ batting lineup collapsed under pressure, losing early wickets and failing to build any substantial partnerships. The innings never gained stability as Mumbai’s bowlers dominated proceedings, with Ashwani Kumar, Mitchell Santner, and AM Ghazanfar delivering impactful spells to dismantle the opposition.
The loss marked Gujarat Titans’ biggest defeat margin in IPL history, exceeding their previous heavy losses against Chennai Super Kings in earlier seasons. While Mumbai Indians moved up to seventh place in the points table with the win, Gujarat slipped to sixth, underlining the tight competition as teams continue to fight for playoff positions.
