India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to play a key role in determining the future of Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set to hold an informal review of leadership plans during an upcoming selection meeting, according to a PTI report.
The discussion is expected to take place alongside a formal meeting in Guwahati on Tuesday, where selectors will finalise India’s squads for the one-off Test and ODI series against Afghanistan. While T20Is against Afghanistan are not scheduled, the leadership structure for the shortest format is likely to be reviewed, with Gambhir’s inputs considered significant in shaping the decision.
Reports suggest that the selectors may also explore a long-term succession plan for the T20I captaincy, particularly in light of India’s evolving team composition following their T20 World Cup triumph under Suryakumar’s leadership. The meeting will also mark the first major selection review since that victory, adding further importance to the discussions.

Suryakumar’s recent form has come under scrutiny, with a below-par run in IPL 2026 for Mumbai Indians adding pressure on his leadership position. Concerns have reportedly grown within the selection group regarding consistency and overall impact, even as he continues to be viewed as one of India’s most dynamic T20 batters.
The report also indicates that broader leadership considerations may extend to other formats, with discussions around the role of Rishabh Pant as vice-captain in Test cricket. Questions have been raised over whether additional responsibility is affecting his batting output, with selectors believed to be assessing whether he should be allowed to focus more freely on his primary role as a match-winning batter. The upcoming meeting is expected to address multiple squad-related decisions across formats, including selection for upcoming tours and long-term planning for India’s leadership group in international cricket.
