Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming defended his team’s strategy and emphasized a long-term vision after the five-time IPL champions suffered their third consecutive defeat in the 2026 season. The loss came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who posted a commanding 250/3, leaving CSK struggling to keep pace.
RCB’s innings was powered by aggressive knocks from Tim David, Rajat Patidar, and Devdutt Padikkal. Despite valiant efforts from Sarfaraz Khan and young talent Prashant Veer, CSK were bowled out for 207. Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a standout performance with the ball, but the team’s inability to contain the RCB hitters, particularly during the final five overs, proved costly.
The result has intensified scrutiny over CSK’s auction strategy and squad overhaul. Fleming acknowledged the team’s reliance on emerging talent, explaining that the franchise’s shift was a deliberate move to secure long-term success. “We’ve got some really good talent. There are five or six new players this season, but we believe they hold high value moving forward,” he said in a post-match press conference.

CSK’s approach marks a clear departure from their traditional reliance on seasoned domestic players like Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, and Kedar Jadhav. Fleming highlighted the importance of investing in uncapped Indian players such as Prashant Veer and wicketkeeper Kartik Sharma, stating that “money was spent on the future,” a strategy aimed at regenerating the franchise and creating a sustainable foundation.
Bowling concerns were central to the discussion, as CSK have now conceded totals exceeding 200 in two of their three matches. Fleming attributed part of the difficulty to evolving trends in T20 cricket, particularly the Impact Player rule, which he believes favors batters. “All bowling attacks are under pressure, especially with the Impact rule. You’re seeing players who are skilled and innovative taking the game on. Executing perfectly under these conditions is a challenge,” he said.
Despite the early-season setbacks, Fleming expressed confidence in key players such as captain Sanju Samson, who has struggled with form. He emphasized that T20 cricket is unpredictable and that the team’s focus remains on building a core of talented players for the future. “He’s training well, and when he gets going, he’s often a match-winner,” Fleming noted. With three losses in as many games, CSK’s campaign is under pressure, but the franchise remains committed to nurturing emerging talent and rebuilding for long-term success.
