Volkswagen is preparing to enter India’s highly competitive sub-4-metre SUV segment with an all-new compact SUV scheduled to launch in 2027. The upcoming model will be manufactured in India and is expected to become the brand’s most accessible SUV in the country. The move comes as compact SUVs continue to attract a large number of Indian buyers, prompting manufacturers to strengthen their presence in the segment.
Volkswagen currently has SUVs such as the Taigun in its India portfolio, but the new model will target a broader customer base by entering the smaller and more affordable category. The company is also expected to use a high level of local content to keep production costs competitive and make the vehicle suitable for Indian market requirements.
The new SUV will be built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, an architecture developed and adapted specifically for the Indian market. The platform already forms the foundation of several Volkswagen Group models sold in India and has been designed to support high localisation and efficient manufacturing.
The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is expected to share its underlying architecture with the Skoda Kylaq, allowing the company to benefit from existing engineering and production expertise. However, Volkswagen is likely to give the new model its own exterior styling, interior design and feature package so that it has a distinct identity in the market. The vehicle will also be developed with inputs from Volkswagen Group engineering teams in India and Europe.
While Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the complete technical specifications, the SUV is expected to share several mechanical components with the Skoda Kylaq. The most likely engine option is the 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol unit, which produces 115bhp and 178Nm in the Kylaq.
The engine is currently offered with a six-speed manual as well as a six-speed automatic transmission. Volkswagen has not officially confirmed whether the same specifications will be carried over to its upcoming model, and final details are expected to be announced closer to the launch. The company is expected to focus on a balance of performance, fuel efficiency and everyday usability for Indian conditions.

Volkswagen is also expected to position the new SUV around its established strengths of driving dynamics, safety and build quality. The company has said the model will be tailored to the preferences of Indian customers while benefiting from the engineering capabilities of Volkswagen Group teams.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer has highlighted the importance of the compact SUV to the company’s India strategy. Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, has also said the model will be developed and produced locally, further strengthening India’s role as a manufacturing and development hub for the group.
The new Volkswagen SUV will face strong competition when it arrives, with the segment already featuring models such as the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet and Skoda Kylaq. These vehicles compete on pricing, equipment, powertrain choices, safety features and ownership costs.
Volkswagen’s new entrant will therefore need to offer a compelling combination of features and pricing to establish itself in the crowded category. Its connection to the Kylaq could also provide advantages in terms of shared components and manufacturing efficiencies, while Volkswagen’s separate design and brand positioning could help it appeal to a different set of buyers.
For Volkswagen India, the 2027 launch is expected to be an important step in expanding its presence beyond its existing SUV and sedan offerings. Entering the sub-4-metre category will give the company access to a much larger pool of buyers looking for a compact SUV.
The vehicle is also expected to support Volkswagen’s strategy of increasing localisation and using India as an important manufacturing and development base within the global Volkswagen Group. More details about the SUV’s name, design, features, dimensions, safety equipment, engine options and pricing are expected to emerge as the launch approaches.
