The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved the resumption of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, more than half a year after the stadium was the site of a tragic stampede. Cricket events had been suspended following celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title in June 2025, which left 11 people dead and over 30 injured outside the stadium.

The decision follows detailed enquiries and recommendations aimed at ensuring spectator safety. A committee led by Justice John Michael Cunha investigated the stampede, issuing a series of safety recommendations. Subsequently, a panel chaired by Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao reviewed whether these measures were being implemented, forming the basis for the Cabinet’s current approval.

Speaking to reporters, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil stated, “Today we decided to allow Indian Premier League matches to be played, but the Cabinet asked the Home Department to fix conditions through issuing special orders for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and RCB to fulfil them. The order may be issued in the next two days.” Among the stipulated safety measures, Patil highlighted the widening of stadium gates to improve crowd movement.

The Cabinet’s approval marks a significant step in restoring normalcy for cricket fans in Bengaluru, who have been unable to attend live IPL matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium since last year’s tragedy. KSCA is expected to coordinate closely with the authorities to comply with all mandated conditions before matches resume.

In addition to stadium safety, the Cabinet also reviewed the Special Intensive Revision process, with discussions on its execution and methodology in certain areas. The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Department has been tasked with studying the matter and submitting a detailed report, which is expected by the end of the month.

The resumption of IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium represents both a cautious return to sporting events in the city and a renewed focus on spectator safety, as authorities and organisers work to prevent a recurrence of past incidents.
