The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly considered resting senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the Afghanistan national cricket team before ultimately deciding to include both players in the squad. The series, scheduled to begin on June 14, is being viewed as an important step in India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with selectors focusing on continuity and squad balance as the team transitions into a new cycle.
According to a report by India Today, the selection panel initially discussed giving the two veterans a break following their workload during the IPL 2026 season. However, the committee later concluded that regular game time would be more beneficial for the pair, especially as both players are now active only in the ODI format for India. The report stated that the selectors believed maintaining rhythm and continuity in the format was more important than resting the senior stars at this stage of the international calendar.
The report further claimed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the team management want younger members of the squad to develop alongside experienced players like Kohli and Rohit. With India expected to undergo a gradual transition ahead of the next ODI World Cup, the Afghanistan series is reportedly being treated as an opportunity for younger cricketers to build chemistry with the senior core. The selectors are also said to be closely monitoring the fitness and performance levels of both veteran batters during the series.

Questions regarding the ODI futures of Kohli and Rohit have intensified in recent months as India looks toward the 2027 World Cup. While both remain among the country’s most experienced players, reports have suggested that their places in the long-term plans are not guaranteed and will depend heavily on consistent performances and physical fitness. Despite speculation, the inclusion of both players in the Afghanistan series signals that the team management still considers them crucial to India’s ODI structure and leadership group.
Kohli recently addressed the discussion surrounding his future in one of the latest episodes of the RCB Podcast. The former India captain stated that he has no interest in continuing in an environment where he constantly has to prove his worth. Kohli said he remains fully committed to preparation and performance, adding that as long as he can contribute value to the team environment, he will continue to play with complete dedication and honesty toward the game.
India’s ODI series against Afghanistan is expected to attract significant attention as it marks another phase in the team’s rebuilding process ahead of major ICC tournaments. Alongside the presence of Kohli and Rohit, the series is likely to provide opportunities for emerging players to cement their positions in the national side. With the selectors balancing transition and experience, the performances of India’s senior stars during the series could influence future decisions regarding the squad’s long-term direction.
