The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed Vishwesh Negi, a 2002-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as India's next Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran. The announcement was made on Monday through an official MEA press release. Negi, who is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, is expected to assume his new diplomatic assignment in Tehran shortly.
Before his current role, Negi served as Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) in the Ministry of Defence, where he was responsible for advancing India's defence diplomacy and strengthening military partnerships with several countries. His responsibilities included leading high-level bilateral engagements, strategic consultations and defence cooperation initiatives. He also represented India during defence consultations with Armenia, co-chairing discussions on military cooperation and defence industrial collaboration.
Negi later joined the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secretary (Indo-Pacific), where he oversees India's engagement with the Indo-Pacific region and participates in multilateral initiatives related to regional security and cooperation. His experience across defence and foreign policy portfolios is expected to strengthen India's diplomatic engagement with Iran, a country with which New Delhi maintains significant strategic and economic ties.

His appointment comes at a sensitive time for West Asia, where regional tensions have heightened concerns over maritime security and stability. India has repeatedly expressed concern over the safety of commercial shipping routes and seafarers, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, while continuing to advocate dialogue and diplomatic solutions to address ongoing conflicts in the region. Last week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to diplomacy and peaceful engagement in a post on X.
The development also coincides with renewed international diplomatic efforts involving Iran. US President Donald Trump has stated that negotiations with Iran, expected to be conducted through intermediaries, are scheduled to begin on Monday. Against this backdrop, Negi's appointment places an experienced career diplomat at the forefront of India's mission in Tehran, where bilateral engagement spans energy cooperation, regional connectivity, trade, cultural exchanges and strategic dialogue. The appointment is also part of the MEA's regular rotation of senior diplomats to overseas missions, ensuring continuity in India's foreign policy objectives and support for Indian citizens abroad.
