At least 173 security personnel from the Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured during violent clashes that erupted in the West Karbi Anglong district on December 22–23, 2025, according to an official update from the Assam Police. The incidents occurred under the jurisdiction of Kheroni Police Station, where two civilians lost their lives amid the unrest. Of the injured personnel, 139 received immediate first aid at the site, while 33 required further medical treatment and were shifted to various hospitals in the region.
The violence appears to have stemmed from long-standing ethnic and land-related tensions in the Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, home to the Karbi tribe and other communities. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact trigger for the clashes, but such flare-ups in the area have historically involved disputes over resources, autonomy demands, and inter-community conflicts. Security forces were deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control, leading to the high number of injuries among personnel who faced stone-pelting, armed attacks, and other forms of aggression from groups involved in the unrest.
As of December 27, 2025, the situation in the affected districts has shown signs of improvement, with police reporting no fresh incidents of violence and normalcy gradually returning. Additional forces remain deployed to maintain peace, prevent further escalation, and ensure the safety of residents. Investigations into the clashes are ongoing, with authorities focusing on identifying the perpetrators and addressing underlying grievances that have repeatedly disrupted life in this hill district of Assam.

The large-scale injuries among security personnel have drawn attention to the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing communal or ethnic flare-ups in Assam's hill regions. The state government and central agencies are likely to review the deployment strategies and response mechanisms in light of this incident, while urging all communities to maintain calm and cooperate with the administration. The return to normalcy is seen as a positive development, though the district continues to remain sensitive and under close watch amid the ongoing probe into the deaths and violence.
