Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay was seen travelling without a full security convoy on Wednesday evening amid continuing uncertainty surrounding his swearing-in ceremony as chief minister. The development came just days after Vijay was provided a full protocol convoy following his major electoral victory, which had fuelled expectations of an imminent government formation in Tamil Nadu. Visuals of the actor-turned-politician moving without the convoy quickly triggered speculation across political circles and social media platforms.
Police officials, however, clarified that the withdrawal of the full protocol convoy was not linked to any downgrade in security or political development. According to sources quoted by NDTV, the decision was made at Vijay’s own request after delays emerged regarding the swearing-in process. Authorities confirmed that while the full convoy arrangement had been withdrawn, essential security coverage and pilot protection would continue to be provided to the TVK leader.
A senior police officer stated that such elaborate convoy arrangements are generally extended to a chief minister-designate or incoming head of government to ensure smooth movement and minimise inconvenience to the public. Officials added that Vijay chose to opt out of the extended convoy setup until greater clarity emerges regarding the formation of the new government. The move is being viewed as an attempt to avoid unnecessary public attention during the ongoing political uncertainty.

The development comes amid intense discussions and negotiations surrounding government formation following the recent election results in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s electoral success marked one of the biggest political developments in the state in recent years, with his party emerging as a major force soon after entering mainstream politics. However, delays in the formal swearing-in process have led to growing speculation regarding alliance dynamics, administrative procedures and final arrangements related to the transition of power.
Political observers noted that Vijay’s decision to reduce the scale of his security movement may also reflect an effort to project simplicity and restraint during a sensitive political phase. Since entering politics, the actor has cultivated an image focused on public accessibility and anti-establishment messaging, which resonated strongly with younger voters and urban constituencies during the election campaign. The temporary withdrawal of the full protocol convoy is likely to further reinforce that image among supporters.
Despite the delay in swearing-in, Vijay continues to be widely viewed as the chief minister-designate, and expectations remain high regarding the announcement of the new government. Officials have not indicated any immediate timeline for the oath-taking ceremony, while political negotiations are understood to be continuing behind closed doors. Meanwhile, security agencies have maintained that adequate protection arrangements for Vijay remain in place even without the larger convoy system.
