More than 17,000 American and Filipino troops will take part in the annual “Balikatan” combat exercises in the Philippines from April 20 to May 8, underscoring the United States’ continued military commitment to the Indo-Pacific region even as it remains engaged in security concerns in the Middle East.
The large-scale drills, described by officials as one of the biggest iterations of the exercise, will involve joint operations between the armed forces of the Philippines and the United States, both longstanding treaty allies. According to U.S. military officials, the exercises are intended to demonstrate readiness and strengthen regional security cooperation amid evolving global threats.
A spokesperson for U.S. forces, Colonel Robert Bunn, said the deployment reflects “dedication and commitment” to the alliance and regional stability. He noted that the drills will include counter-drone operations and other simulated combat scenarios, highlighting modern warfare capabilities being tested during the exercise.

This year’s Balikatan drills will also see expanded participation from allied nations, including Japan, France, and Canada, all of which have defence agreements with Manila. Japanese forces are expected to conduct a missile-firing exercise in waters off northwestern Philippines, near areas of strategic interest in the South China Sea, and Japan’s defence leadership has been invited to observe the live-fire drills.
The exercises come amid continued regional tensions in the South China Sea, where China has opposed military drills involving U.S. forces, particularly those conducted near disputed waters. Beijing claims almost the entire sea, while the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan also assert competing territorial claims over parts of the resource-rich maritime region.
Philippine military officials have reiterated that the exercises are not directed at any single country but are aimed at enhancing defensive capabilities and protecting national interests. The drills are also seen as part of broader efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in key global trade routes amid rising geopolitical competition in the region.
