A sharp political confrontation erupted in Punjab on Wednesday after Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu accused Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of acting like an “ISI agent” and attempting to undermine India’s interests. The remarks triggered strong reactions from the Aam Aadmi Party and opposition leaders, escalating tensions between the ruling party in Punjab and the BJP-led central government.
The controversy began after Mann criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent foreign visits during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Responding to the criticism, Bittu alleged that the Punjab Chief Minister was attempting to disrupt the Prime Minister’s work and urged citizens to “keep an eye” on him. The remarks quickly sparked outrage among AAP leaders, who accused the Union Minister of making irresponsible and inflammatory statements against a constitutional office-holder.
AAP leader Baltej Singh Pannu strongly condemned the remarks and questioned the BJP-led government over past terror incidents, including the Pulwama, Pathankot, Pahalgam, and Delhi bomb attacks. Pannu said Mann did not require validation or “certificates” from Bittu and accused the Union Minister of attempting to divert attention from serious national security issues. The exchange intensified political rhetoric in Punjab, where relations between the AAP government and the BJP have remained strained on several issues.

The remarks also drew criticism from the Indian National Congress. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring described the allegation as one of the most serious accusations that can be levelled against a sitting Chief Minister. Warring questioned why no formal investigation or FIR had been initiated if the union minister genuinely possessed evidence to support such claims. He suggested the comments appeared politically motivated and aimed at attracting media attention rather than addressing any actual security concern.
The political clash comes at a time when Mann has intensified his criticism of the BJP and Prime Minister Modi following recent political developments in Punjab. After six AAP Rajya Sabha MPs reportedly joined the BJP in late April, Mann sharpened his attacks on the Centre, particularly focusing on Modi’s overseas visits and fuel price hikes. During public events, Mann criticised appeals made by the Prime Minister urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption, avoid unnecessary foreign travel, and conserve foreign reserves while simultaneously undertaking multiple international tours.
Mann has also targeted the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices, describing it as an “unannounced lockdown” on ordinary citizens already facing economic pressure. The latest exchange highlights the increasingly confrontational political atmosphere in Punjab ahead of future electoral battles, with major parties intensifying rhetoric on governance, national security, and economic issues. No official response had been issued by the Union Home Ministry regarding Bittu’s remarks at the time of reporting.
