Two alleged burglars in Gujarat's Valsad district found themselves in an unusual situation when their attempted theft went wrong and they became trapped inside the jewellery shop they had allegedly entered to rob. The men, identified as Dinesh Sonkar and Vipin Pathak, reportedly called the police emergency helpline 112 after local residents pulled down the shop's shutter. The accused allegedly feared that the crowd gathered outside would attack them if they were caught. Police eventually arrived at the spot, rescued the men from the angry crowd and arrested them.
The incident took place late Wednesday at BJ Jewellers in Sanjan village, located in the Umargam subdivision of Valsad district. According to police, the two men allegedly broke into the jewellery shop after making preparations to carry out a theft. Their plan, however, was disrupted when local residents noticed suspicious activity around the store. The residents reportedly realised that the shop's lock had been tampered with and became suspicious that someone had entered the premises. As more people gathered at the location, they pulled down the shutter, leaving the alleged burglars trapped inside.
With the crowd outside growing larger, the two men reportedly locked themselves inside the shop and were unable to find a way out. Fearing that they could be assaulted by the people waiting outside, one of the alleged burglars eventually contacted the police. During the emergency call, the man reportedly told the officer that they had come to the shop to commit a theft but had been trapped after people outside pulled down the shutter. He then asked the police to reach the location and save them. The unusual call alerted the police to both the burglary attempt and the situation developing outside the shop.

Police teams soon reached BJ Jewellers, where a crowd had gathered. Some men were reportedly carrying sticks and attempting to open the shutter after learning that the suspected burglars were inside. Officers intervened before the situation could escalate and took control of the scene. The two suspects were brought out of the shop and arrested. During the operation, police also recovered jewellery that the men allegedly planned to take away. Several tools reportedly carried by the accused for use during the burglary were also seized as part of the investigation.
The location of the attempted burglary has drawn attention because Sanjan is situated near the boundaries of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman. Police officials said the area's proximity to multiple state and Union Territory borders can make it easier for criminals to move from one jurisdiction to another after committing offences. Investigators are therefore examining the backgrounds of the two arrested men and checking whether they could have been involved in similar incidents elsewhere. The police are also expected to investigate how the accused reached the shop and whether anyone else was involved in the alleged plan.
Deputy Superintendent of Police B Dave said the police would seek custody of the two accused to investigate their criminal records and establish whether they have any connection with previous cases. The recovery of jewellery and burglary tools has become an important part of the investigation as officers work to determine the full sequence of events. What began as an alleged attempt to break into a jewellery shop ended unexpectedly when the suspects were trapped by local residents and had to call the police themselves for protection. The two men remain under investigation as authorities examine the case and their possible links to other crimes.
