US President Donald Trump flew aboard a newly retrofitted Boeing 747-800 serving as Air Force One for a trip to North Dakota on Wednesday, marking the aircraft’s first official presidential voyage after extensive refurbishment. The jet, a $400 million aircraft originally gifted by Qatar, has been upgraded to function as a temporary presidential transport while the United States awaits delivery of next-generation Air Force One planes, which are not expected to enter service until 2028.
The aircraft’s design has been significantly altered to reflect Trump’s personal preferences, departing from the traditional light blue livery associated with Air Force One. The new exterior features a navy-blue underbelly accented with red and gold stripes, a colour scheme aligned with the President’s branding style. Inside, the jet reportedly includes upgraded interiors such as plush carpeting, lie-flat seating, wood-panel finishes, and customised presidential detailing, including a presidential seal incorporated into seatbelt designs.
According to reports and official descriptions of the aircraft, the refurbishment was carried out to create a “bridge solution” between the ageing Air Force One fleet and the upcoming replacement aircraft. The current presidential planes, which have been in service for more than three decades, are increasingly viewed as outdated, prompting interim measures to ensure continuity in presidential air travel capabilities.

The US Air Force has stated that the modifications made to the aircraft’s structure and cabin layout were limited, with emphasis placed primarily on security upgrades rather than full-scale redesign. Officials also indicated that the total cost of security-related enhancements remained below $400 million, though the exact breakdown of expenses has not been publicly detailed. The aircraft is expected to serve as a temporary solution until the new presidential jets, currently under development, are completed and delivered.
Speaking to reporters, Trump expressed approval of the aircraft’s upgraded appearance and interior design, noting that it reflects his preferred aesthetic approach. “You can do two things: You can low-key it, or you can show it,” he said, defending the more elaborate styling of the refurbished plane. His comments highlight a broader shift in presentation style compared to previous administrations, particularly in the visual and symbolic representation of presidential transport.
The jet was initially toured by Trump shortly after his return to the White House last year, when he reportedly instructed officials to prepare it for use during his remaining term. The aircraft’s debut flight now marks a significant milestone in its operational deployment, underscoring ongoing efforts to modernise presidential aviation infrastructure while balancing budget constraints and security requirements.
