US President Donald Trump on Monday said Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit Washington in late September, using the announcement to highlight his administration's plans to build a new state ballroom at the White House to accommodate larger gatherings for visiting foreign leaders. Trump made the remarks during a luncheon in the White House Rose Garden, where he discussed ongoing renovation and expansion projects at the Executive Mansion.
Speaking to attendees, Trump said Xi was expected to arrive around September 24, although he did not provide additional details about the proposed visit or its agenda. Referring to the anticipated trip, Trump said the White House needed a much larger venue to host dignitaries and guests during high-profile state events. He suggested that thousands of people would want to attend events involving the Chinese leader, adding that similar interest is generated during visits by other prominent world leaders, including Britain's King Charles III.
"We need a big ballroom we could hold thousands of people in to see him," Trump said, describing the proposed facility as a major addition to the White House complex. He argued that the current Executive Mansion lacks adequate space for large ceremonial functions and formal state receptions, making it difficult to host major diplomatic occasions.

Trump said the idea of constructing a ballroom at the White House is not new, claiming that presidents and administrations had wanted such a facility for more than 150 years. According to him, the absence of a dedicated ballroom has limited the White House's ability to conduct large-scale official events and state dinners. He described the proposed structure as a long-overdue project that would modernize the Executive Mansion while preserving its role as the official residence and workplace of the US President.
The President also outlined his vision for the planned building, saying it would become one of Washington's most prominent landmarks once completed. He claimed the ballroom would incorporate advanced security features to protect visiting dignitaries and guests. According to Trump, the structure would be "bulletproof, drone-proof" and, in some cases, "missile-proof." He added that the project would involve consultation with senior military officials and include what he described as a significant military component, though he did not elaborate on what that would entail.
Trump's comments linked the proposed expansion of the White House to the increasing demands of modern diplomacy, where state visits often involve large delegations, business leaders, diplomats and invited guests. A larger venue, he suggested, would allow the United States to host international leaders in a setting better suited for major ceremonial occasions and official receptions.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of a complex relationship between the United States and China. The world's two largest economies remain deeply interconnected through trade and investment but continue to compete over issues including technology, national security, regional influence and global supply chains. Relations have also been shaped by disagreements over Taiwan, the South China Sea, export controls and tariffs, making high-level diplomatic engagements closely watched by governments and markets alike.
If the visit takes place, it would represent another significant meeting between the leaders of the two countries at a time when Washington and Beijing continue efforts to manage strategic competition while maintaining channels of communication. High-level meetings between the United States and China are often viewed as opportunities to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, security concerns and regional stability.
While Trump expressed confidence that Xi would visit Washington toward the end of September, no additional details regarding the schedule, planned meetings or official programme were announced. There was also no immediate confirmation from the Chinese government regarding the proposed visit. Any such trip is expected to attract global attention given its potential implications for US-China relations and broader international diplomacy.
