In a major boost to healthcare in Tripura, the government-run Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital has successfully performed two consecutive kidney transplants for the first time in the state’s history. Hospital Superintendent Dr Bidhan Goswami said the milestone reflects the growing strength of the state’s medical infrastructure, crediting the leadership of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also oversees the health portfolio.
With the latest procedures conducted on March 30 and 31, the hospital has now completed a total of seven successful kidney transplants. In both recent cases, donors and recipients are reported to be stable and recovering well under medical supervision.
The first transplant involved a 36-year-old patient from South Tripura who received a kidney from his childhood friend. The second procedure was carried out on a 33-year-old patient from West Tripura, with his father serving as the donor.
These surgeries were conducted by a multidisciplinary team from departments including nephrology, urology, and anaesthesiology, with additional support from specialists from a private hospital in Manipur.

Officials noted that while earlier transplants in the state were performed individually, this marks the first instance of two being conducted on consecutive days, setting a new benchmark for Tripura’s healthcare system.
The state’s first kidney transplant was performed in July 2024, and the steady progress since then highlights ongoing efforts to improve access to advanced medical care. The government has also sought support from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, to further strengthen healthcare services and infrastructure in the region.
