Traffic on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway was severely disrupted on Sunday as hundreds of protesters gathered to demand justice in connection with the alleged sexual assault and murder of a minor girl in Pune. The demonstration brought movement on one of western India’s busiest transport corridors to a standstill for several hours, causing long vehicle queues and delays for commuters.
The protest was organised by local groups and residents who assembled near key junctions along the highway, blocking lanes and staging sit-ins. Demonstrators carried placards and raised slogans calling for swift and strict action against those accused in the case. The gathering quickly swelled in size, leading to heightened congestion and prompting traffic authorities to divert vehicles to alternate routes.
The case, which has triggered widespread outrage in Pune and surrounding regions, involves the alleged sexual assault and killing of a minor. While official details remain limited, police investigations are underway, and authorities have stated that suspects have been identified and are being questioned. The incident has sparked strong public anger, with repeated calls for faster judicial proceedings and stronger safeguards for children.

Law enforcement personnel were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation and restore order along the highway. Traffic police worked to regulate vehicle movement and gradually clear sections of the route, although delays persisted due to the scale of the disruption. Authorities also urged protesters to vacate the highway, citing safety risks for both demonstrators and commuters.
The blockade highlighted the growing frequency of public protests in response to violent crimes, particularly those involving minors, in Maharashtra. Civic groups and activists have increasingly taken to major roads and public spaces to demand accountability and justice, often resulting in significant disruption to transport infrastructure.
As normal traffic flow was gradually restored, officials continued to monitor the situation closely, while local administrations reiterated their commitment to a thorough investigation. The incident has once again intensified public discourse around child safety, policing efficiency, and the urgency of legal action in high-profile criminal cases.
