The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday strongly denied reports claiming that party MP Abhishek Banerjee had received notices from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation regarding multiple properties allegedly linked to him and his family members. The party described the alleged civic notices as “completely false, fabricated, and devoid of any credibility” and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of spreading misleading narratives through unofficial leaks. The controversy emerged after several media reports claimed that civic authorities had sought documents related to construction approvals at various properties allegedly associated with the TMC national general secretary.
In an official statement, the Trinamool Congress said that the notice being circulated in sections of the media lacked authenticity and should not be treated as credible information. The party alleged that the documents were being propagated unofficially by the BJP in an attempt to target senior party leaders politically ahead of upcoming electoral developments in the state. TMC further claimed that attempts were being made to connect other party functionaries to the matter despite the absence of verified evidence or official confirmation from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The ruling party in West Bengal also appealed to journalists and media organizations to independently verify the claims before publishing or amplifying them. In its statement, the TMC urged members of the media fraternity to visit the addresses mentioned in the alleged notice or contact the phone numbers listed in the circulated documents to establish the facts. The party stressed that responsible journalism required verification and accused some platforms of promoting politically motivated narratives without proper scrutiny or ethical consideration.

The controversy gained momentum after reports suggested that the TMC-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation had issued notices concerning between 17 and 21 properties allegedly linked to Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, his relatives, and a private company. According to reports quoting civic sources, the notices sought approved building plans and related construction documents for examination. The reports further claimed that the authorities were checking whether the structures complied with sanctioned plans approved under municipal regulations.
As per the reported details, some of the properties under scrutiny allegedly included Abhishek Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road, along with buildings located in areas such as Kalighat Road, Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road, and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani in Kolkata. Civic officials quoted in reports said that the notices were issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which allows authorities to seek explanations regarding alleged unauthorized constructions and provide property owners an opportunity to present supporting documents or clarifications.
The Trinamool Congress warned that any false reporting or misleading social media posts connected to the issue would be addressed through legal channels before competent courts. The party reiterated that the circulated reports were fabricated and urged the media to act with greater responsibility while covering politically sensitive matters. The development has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP, with both parties accusing each other of spreading misinformation and attempting to influence public perception in West Bengal.
