A 17-year-old suspect unleashed chaos in New York City’s iconic Times Square, wounding three people in a shooting at 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the New York Police Department (NYPD) reported. The incident, which occurred at the bustling intersection of 44th Street and 7th Avenue, stemmed from a verbal dispute between the teen and a 19-year-old male victim, escalating into gunfire that injured an 18-year-old woman, grazed in the neck, a 19-year-old man, shot in the right foot, and a 65-year-old man, struck in the left leg. All victims were rushed to Bellevue Hospital and remain in stable condition.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene, and a firearm was recovered, though no charges have been filed yet, according to the NYPD. Social media footage captured panicked crowds fleeing, police surrounding a vehicle, and officers attending to the wounded. Posts on X described the terror, with sirens blaring and stretchers deployed as the tourist hotspot turned chaotic.
Despite the incident, New York City has seen a significant decline in gun violence, with shooting incidents down 23% through August 3, 2025, marking the lowest in decades. The NYPD’s ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the motive and any connections between the suspect and victims, amid heightened scrutiny of crime in the city ahead of November’s mayoral elections.
This shooting follows another high-profile incident last month in a Manhattan office tower, where four were killed, underscoring persistent challenges despite the city’s overall crime drop.
