A teachers’ association in Tamil Nadu has alleged that the notification for the graduate constituency election linked to Periyar University has not yet been issued, raising concerns among educators and graduates about possible delays in the electoral process. The association has urged authorities to provide clarity on the matter and ensure that the election schedule is announced at the earliest.
According to representatives of the association, graduates and teachers affiliated with the university have been waiting for an official notification regarding the election, but no announcement has been made so far. They said the absence of a formal notification has created uncertainty among eligible voters who are expected to participate in the constituency polls.
Members of the association noted that graduate constituency elections play an important role in providing representation to educated voters in legislative bodies. These constituencies are designed to allow graduates to elect their representatives, who then raise issues related to education, employment and professional development in the legislative framework.

The association further stated that the delay in issuing the notification could affect preparations for the election. Potential candidates typically require adequate time to organise campaigns, complete nomination procedures and communicate with voters. Similarly, graduates who wish to participate in the electoral process must ensure that their names are included in the electoral rolls, which also requires advance notice.
Teachers affiliated with the university said many graduates have approached them seeking information about the election schedule. However, in the absence of an official announcement from the authorities responsible for conducting the polls, there has been little clarity regarding when the process will begin. The association said this uncertainty has led to growing frustration among sections of the academic community.
Graduate constituencies are a unique feature of India’s electoral system, allowing certain categories of voters such as graduates and teachers to elect members to legislative councils in a few states. These elections are typically overseen by the Election Commission of India in coordination with state authorities and follow specific eligibility and registration procedures for voters.
The teachers’ association has called on the authorities to issue the notification soon and ensure transparency in the election process. It said a clear schedule would help restore confidence among graduates and educators while enabling all stakeholders to prepare properly for the polls.
Officials have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations, but the association has indicated that it will continue to press for clarity. Members said they hope the authorities will address the issue promptly and proceed with the election in accordance with established procedures.
