A tanker caught fire after being struck by an “unknown projectile” off Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said. The incident occurred amid renewed Houthi threats targeting shipping linked to the region, raising fresh concerns over the security of commercial vessels operating through the strategically important Red Sea maritime corridor.
According to UKMTO, the tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile, which caused a fire to break out on the vessel’s main deck. The agency said the incident took place 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu, a Saudi port city on the Red Sea coast located several hundred kilometres north of Yemen. The circumstances surrounding the projectile and the identity of those responsible were not immediately established.
UKMTO said all crew members aboard the tanker were safe and had been accounted for following the incident. There were no immediate reports of casualties among the crew. The agency also said there had been no reported environmental impact from the incident, although the fire aboard the vessel added to concerns about the risks faced by commercial shipping in waters surrounding the Arabian Peninsula.
