The Supreme Court on Monday granted relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a case involving allegations of disproportionate assets, directing the Allahabad High Court to defer further proceedings in the matter for now. The top court also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) not to file any report before the high court in connection with the case, news agency PTI reported.
The development came after Gandhi approached the Supreme Court challenging an earlier order of the Allahabad High Court. The high court had directed the CBI and ED to verify allegations of disproportionate assets against the Congress leader. Gandhi's challenge brought the matter before the top court, which has now intervened by asking the Allahabad High Court not to proceed with the case at this stage.
The case relates to allegations concerning Gandhi's assets, which he has challenged through the legal proceedings. The allegations remain subject to judicial consideration, and the latest Supreme Court direction does not amount to a finding on whether any wrongdoing took place. The court's order instead concerns the continuation of proceedings before the Allahabad High Court and the submission of investigative reports by central agencies.

The Supreme Court's direction also prevents the CBI and ED from placing any report before the Allahabad High Court for the time being. The move comes against the backdrop of ongoing scrutiny by the agencies following directions issued by the high court's Lucknow bench. The latest order temporarily changes the course of those proceedings while the matter remains before the Supreme Court.
Earlier, on July 20, the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench had expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI's response concerning the allegations. It subsequently directed a senior officer of the agency to personally submit a fresh affidavit setting out details of the progress made in the probe. The direction had sought greater clarity on the status of the investigation concerning the allegations against Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
The high court's order had followed proceedings concerning a complaint and allegations of disproportionate assets involving Gandhi. The CBI was asked to provide details regarding the steps taken in connection with the matter, while the ED was also involved in the verification process. Gandhi subsequently challenged the high court's direction before the Supreme Court, seeking relief from the proceedings.
The Supreme Court's latest intervention means that the Allahabad High Court will not proceed with the matter for now, while the CBI and ED have been told not to submit reports before it. The order provides temporary relief to Gandhi in the proceedings but does not itself determine the merits of the allegations. Further proceedings will depend on directions issued by the Supreme Court as the legal challenge continues.
The case is significant politically as Gandhi is a senior Congress leader and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Supreme Court's decision to defer the high court proceedings gives his legal team a reprieve from the immediate investigative developments ordered by the Allahabad High Court. The allegations, however, remain part of the ongoing legal process, with no final judicial determination on their merits indicated by Monday's order.
