In a harrowing incident early today, July 18, a speeding truck plowed through a security barricade at Battal Ballian on the Jammu–Srinagar highway and collided head-on with an SUV ferrying Amarnath pilgrims. The crash, which took place at approximately 6:13 AM, sent shockwaves through Udhampur district.
Eyewitnesses say the vehicle, later identified as a heavy goods truck with Punjab registration PB65AV/9318, breached a CISF manned barrier before smashing into an Innova (registration UP81BN/3701). The SUV was part of the 16th batch of over 7,900 yatris en route to Pahalgam base camp.
The violent collision forced the truck across a median divider, where it eventually crashed into the boundary wall of a nearby house.

Among the eight pilgrims onboard, five sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Udhampur’s Government Medical College Hospital by CRPF personnel; authorities report all are now stable. The remaining three were treated on-site for minor injuries.
A police FIR has been filed, and the truck has been impounded for further investigation. Officials are probing how the barricade security was so easily overpowered—and whether negligence or overspeeding played a role.
