A six-year-old girl died after a speeding car rammed into the e-rickshaw she was travelling in with her grandmother in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area, police said. The collision caused the three-wheeler to overturn, throwing both passengers onto the road and leaving the child critically injured in what authorities have registered as a hit-and-run case.
According to police, the accident occurred near the Janakpuri Fire Station at around 7:40 am on February 17. The girl and her 57-year-old grandmother, Mercy Xavier, were on their way to school when the fast-moving vehicle struck their e-rickshaw. Officers said both victims suffered serious injuries and were rushed for medical treatment soon after the crash.
Recounting the incident, Mercy Xavier told PTI that the impact was sudden and violent. She said she was thrown onto the road before she could understand what had happened and later found her granddaughter lying beside her, bleeding. Despite being in shock and pain, she said her immediate concern was the child’s condition.

The grandmother alleged that she pleaded with a nearby motorist to help take the injured girl to the hospital, but the person allegedly drove away without assisting them. The child’s mother, who works at a hospital, said she was informed about the accident by a staff member who had witnessed the aftermath and reported that bystanders had gathered but initially failed to help.
Police said the victims were first taken to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital and later shifted to a facility in Dwarka, where the six-year-old succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Investigators registered a case at Janakpuri police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rash and negligent driving causing death.
Authorities have identified and arrested the accused driver, Sanjeev, and seized the vehicle involved in the crash. Officials said witness statements are being recorded, and CCTV footage from cameras near the fire station and surrounding areas is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine further legal action.
