India has emerged as a leading voice and initiator in addressing critical challenges facing the Global South, South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, said on Wednesday. He highlighted the country’s consistent efforts in voicing the concerns of developing nations on international platforms.
Sooklal pointed to India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 as a landmark initiative, noting that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the African Union was brought on board as a full G20 member. This, he said, ensured that the entire African continent could participate fully in global economic discussions.
“India also spearheaded the Voice of the Global South Summit, chaired twice by PM Modi, which spotlighted key issues confronting developing nations and promoted collective solutions,” Sooklal told IANS. He emphasized that India is not just a participant but a driving force in shaping global policy for the Global South.

The South African envoy also praised PM Modi’s leadership, noting that India’s GDP has more than doubled over the past decade, lifting millions out of poverty. He highlighted India’s active role in BRICS, G20, and Global South initiatives, which has reinforced its position as a decisive global player.
Sooklal further addressed regional stability, expressing hope that Bangladesh’s upcoming elections would ensure the return of a democratically elected government. He emphasized that democracy is crucial for the stability of South Asian nations, which benefits both regional and global interests.
India’s proactive engagement in multilateral forums, according to the envoy, positions it as a cornerstone of emerging multipolar global governance, where developing nations have a stronger voice in shaping international economic and political policies.
