A shooting at Lincoln University’s homecoming celebration late Saturday night left one person dead and six others wounded, shattering festivities at the historically Black institution southwest of Philadelphia. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the International Cultural Center, where alumni and students were gathered for tailgating after a football game. Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe stated that while investigators believe multiple shooters were involved, there is no evidence of a premeditated mass casualty attack.
The victim killed was identified as 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers of Wilmington, Delaware, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head shortly after midnight. The six injured individuals, aged 20 to 25—including one current student, one graduate, and four with no direct university affiliation—are expected to survive. Authorities have arrested one person on charges of carrying a concealed firearm without a licence and are examining whether that weapon was used in the shooting.
Law enforcement conducted grid searches of the campus and surrounding areas, with support from state police and the FBI. Officials urged witnesses to submit video footage or information to aid the investigation. The university, founded in 1854 as the first degree-granting HBCU, cancelled classes on Monday and planned a community gathering to process the tragedy. Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee described the campus as “devastated”, emphasising the contrast with the day’s intended celebration of legacy and pride.
