A woman reportedly ended her relationship after discovering that her boyfriend had been using an artificial intelligence (AI) agent to manage several aspects of their relationship, including messages, check-ins and date planning. The unusual incident has sparked a debate online about the growing role of AI in personal and romantic interactions.

The story was shared on X by Delia Lazarescu, who said her best friend recently broke up with her boyfriend after learning that an AI agent had been handling much of their relationship. According to her post, the boyfriend's thoughtful messages, good morning texts, regular check-ins and even conflict-resolution conversations were reportedly automated.

The woman also claimed that the AI system was being used to organise dinner dates and other relationship-related activities. Describing the situation humorously, Lazarescu said her friend had become "emotionally attached to a cron job", referring to an automated computer task that runs at scheduled times.

The post quickly attracted attention online, with users reacting with a mix of humour, disbelief and criticism. Some accused the boyfriend of outsourcing the emotional effort required in a relationship, while others argued that using AI to help communicate or organise plans is not necessarily different from relying on assistants or other tools.

One social media user called the situation "actually horrifying", arguing that the boyfriend had outsourced emotional labour to an algorithm while still expecting credit for being a caring partner. Another compared AI-assisted affection to a wealthy person sending flowers through a butler, questioning whether the reaction would be different if a human assistant performed the same tasks.

The incident has renewed discussion about the boundaries of AI use in relationships as increasingly sophisticated digital agents can draft messages, schedule dates, remember important occasions and assist with interpersonal communication. While some people see such tools as useful support, others believe that delegating emotionally meaningful interactions to AI can undermine authenticity and trust between partners.
