Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, who has represented Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, was arrested in Hooghly late Monday night following allegations by a woman medical student from Karnataka, police said. The woman has alleged that she was in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the relationship was based on a promise of marriage. Porel was arrested by Mogra police following a court order and is expected to be produced before a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday. Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest and said a case had been registered against the cricketer.
“There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today,” Singh told PTI. The arrest followed an investigation initiated after the woman approached the police with her allegations. According to police, the woman, who is a medical student from Karnataka, lodged a complaint at Mogra police station on June 23. In her complaint, she alleged that she and Porel had been in a relationship for approximately three-and-a-half years and had intended to marry. She subsequently accused him of wrongdoing in connection with the relationship and the alleged promise of marriage.
Police registered a case and began investigating the allegations. Police sources said the case has been registered under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act. Section 69 of the BNS deals with sexual intercourse by deceitful means, including a promise to marry without the intention of fulfilling it. The precise charges and allegations will be examined through the judicial process, and an arrest or registration of a case does not by itself establish guilt.

Following the complaint, police teams reportedly visited Porel’s residence in Chandannagar several times as part of their investigation. However, officers were unable to find him at the residence during those visits. The investigation continued, and police subsequently acted on the court order authorising his arrest. Porel was taken into custody late Monday night by personnel from Mogra police station. The cricketer is expected to be presented before a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, where the next stage of the legal proceedings will be determined. The court may consider matters relating to custody and the investigation based on the submissions of the police and the accused.
Authorities are continuing to gather information and evidence connected to the complaint as the case progresses through the legal system. Porel has played domestic cricket for Bengal and has also been part of the Delhi Capitals setup in the IPL. The allegations and subsequent arrest come amid his ongoing cricket career. No response has yet been reported from Porel or his family regarding the allegations or the arrest. Their version of events is awaited as the legal proceedings begin. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the cricketer will be subject to examination by the appropriate judicial authorities.
