A 43-year-old woman, Mamta, from Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly eloped with her daughter’s father-in-law, Shailendra (46), prompting a police complaint filed by her husband, Sunil Kumar Singh, on Friday.
The duo allegedly fled with cash, jewellery, and valuables from their home under the Civil Lines police station jurisdiction, police said.
Sunil, a truck driver frequently away for work, alleged that Mamta, a mother of four, had been in a year-long relationship with Shailendra, a resident of the same area. “On April 11, Mamta called Shailendra, and they absconded together,” Sunil stated in his complaint.

His son, Sachin, supported the claim, noting that Mamta often invited Shailendra to their home during Sunil’s absences, engaging in frequent phone conversations.
Dataganj Circle Officer KK Tiwari confirmed that police are actively searching for Mamta and Shailendra, with further action to be determined based on the investigation’s findings.
The incident has stirred local discussion, with posts on social media reflecting mixed sentiments—some criticizing the elopement, others questioning familial dynamics. The case underscores ongoing social tensions around extramarital relationships in the region, similar to a 2023 incident in Bareilly.
