Russia launched an unprecedented 728 Shahed and decoy drones, along with 13 missiles, targeting Ukraine overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. The barrage, one of the largest in the three-year war, primarily struck the western Volyn region, including Lutsk, near Poland and Belarus. Ukrainian air defenses neutralized 296 drones and seven missiles, with 415 drones jammed or lost from radar. No casualties were reported, though fires erupted in Lutsk’s warehouses and garages.
The attack follows Ukraine’s June 1 drone strikes on Russian airbases, escalating tensions as peace talks falter. President Zelenskyy called Lutsk the hardest hit, with 10 other regions also affected. The assault’s scale, involving six Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, underscores Russia’s intensified aerial campaign amid stalled ceasefire efforts and Trump’s renewed U.S. weapons support.
