A political dispute erupted between the BJP and Congress over a ‘shuddhikaran’, or purification ceremony, conducted at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani after a rally addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on August 8. The ceremony has triggered allegations and counter-allegations between the two parties, with Congress claiming that the ritual reflected caste-based discrimination and the BJP rejecting the charge. The incident has added to the political friction in Uttarakhand ahead of the upcoming electoral battles.

Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal alleged that members of the ‘Shri Ram Sena’ group conducted the ceremony after Kharge’s rally and claimed that the organisation was associated with the BJP. Godiyal further alleged that the venue was purified because Kharge belongs to the Dalit community. He described the ritual as a “crime against humanity” and accused the BJP of attempting to create divisions in society along caste lines. Godiyal also questioned the Nainital senior superintendent of police over the alleged lack of action against the group.

The BJP has strongly rejected the allegations and denied having any connection with the group that conducted the ceremony. The party accused the Congress of attempting to malign the BJP for political purposes. BJP state spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Khajan Das said the controversy had been presented in a politically motivated manner and maintained that the purification ceremony was not connected to Kharge’s caste. The BJP instead focused on events that it claimed took place during the Congress rally at the venue.

Das alleged that certain slogans were raised during Kharge’s rally that hurt the sentiments of members of the Sanatan community. He said the Ramlila Ground holds religious significance and claimed that people were upset by slogans that, according to the BJP, were related to another religion. The BJP has used this argument to explain the anger surrounding the event while rejecting the Congress’s allegation that the ceremony was motivated by caste discrimination.

The BJP also turned the Congress’s allegations back on the party, with Das accusing it of having a history of disrespecting prominent Dalit leaders. He referred to former Congress presidents Sitaram Kesri and leaders such as Babu Jagjivan Ram and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar while challenging the Congress to explain its record on Dalit leadership. The competing claims have turned what began as a ceremony at a public venue into a broader political confrontation over caste, religion and the treatment of political leaders.

The controversy comes as both parties continue to spar over issues of identity, social harmony and religious sentiment in Uttarakhand. Congress has maintained that the alleged purification ritual reflects discriminatory thinking, while the BJP has denied the caste-related allegation and defended its position by citing concerns over the slogans allegedly raised during the rally. With both sides offering sharply different accounts of the circumstances surrounding the ceremony, the dispute remains politically charged.
