Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday accused the Union government of being responsible for the continued disruption of both Houses of Parliament, alleging that the Centre was avoiding a debate on the alleged “injustice and atrocities” faced by students protesting over NEET irregularities. Kharge questioned why Union Home Minister Amit Shah had not made a statement on the issue and demanded that the government respond to the Opposition's concerns. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, Kharge said the Opposition wanted a discussion on the matter but alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah were unwilling to come to Parliament and address the issue.

He claimed that the government had the responsibility to ensure that Parliament functioned and accused the Prime Minister and Home Minister of being responsible for the disruption. Kharge specifically questioned why Shah had not made a statement regarding alleged brutalities against students who protested over NEET irregularities on July 20. According to the Congress chief, the Opposition had been seeking a response from the Home Minister for the past 17 days. He argued that the demand was limited to a statement and a debate on the issue rather than any broader confrontation with the government.

“We want a debate. Why do they (government) not want to debate?” Kharge said, questioning why ministers could issue statements on other matters but were not responding to the concerns raised by the Opposition. He alleged that the government did not have an adequate response to the issue and claimed that its refusal to engage with the Opposition had contributed to Parliament not being able to function normally. Kharge further alleged that the Prime Minister and Home Minister were “afraid” of coming to the House and facing questions from the Opposition.

He linked their alleged reluctance to the government's handling of the issue and said their absence indicated that they knew something had gone wrong. The Congress president's remarks came amid continuing political friction between the Opposition and the government over the handling of student protests and NEET-related concerns. The Congress has repeatedly sought accountability over allegations concerning irregularities surrounding the medical entrance examination and the treatment of students who protested against them.

The party has demanded that the government address the concerns on the floor of Parliament, while the broader dispute has contributed to repeated clashes between the treasury and Opposition benches. Kharge said the Opposition would continue pressing for a response from Shah and the government. His remarks are likely to intensify the political confrontation in Parliament, with the Congress maintaining that a statement from the Home Minister is necessary before the issue can be adequately debated. The government, meanwhile, faces continued pressure from the Opposition over the allegations and the disruption of legislative proceedings.
