Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by Chairman Mukesh Ambani, announced a massive investment of Rs 50,000 crore in Assam over the next five years. The announcement came during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment & Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This ambitious plan aims to transform Assam into a hub of technology, clean energy, and retail growth, significantly boosting the state’s economy.
Ambani highlighted that Reliance had previously committed Rs 5,000 crore at the 2018 Assam investment summit, but the company has already surpassed that with investments exceeding Rs 12,000 crore. Building on this foundation, the new Rs 50,000 crore investment will focus on five key areas. First, Reliance plans to establish an AI-ready data center to integrate artificial intelligence into education, healthcare, and agriculture, with Ambani noting that “AI will not only mean artificial intelligence but also Assam intelligence.” Second, the company will invest in clean energy initiatives, including two compressed biogas (CBG) units and nuclear energy projects. Third, a mega food park will be set up to enhance agricultural and horticultural processing, complementing Reliance’s existing Campa Cola bottling plant in the state. Fourth, the retail sector will see a major expansion, with Reliance doubling its retail stores in Assam from 400 to 800. Finally, the hospitality sector will get a boost with the introduction of a luxury Oberoi hotel.
This investment is expected to create tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs, with Ambani emphasising its potential to position Assam as a “technological paradise”. The announcement aligns with broader efforts to attract investment to Assam, as evidenced by similar Rs 50,000 crore pledges from the Adani Group and Vedanta Group at the same summit. With these developments, Assam is poised for significant economic growth, leveraging its strategic location and natural resources to become a key player in India’s northeastern region.
