In a tragic turn of events, the death toll from a stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27 has climbed to a staggering 40, with over 60 people still receiving treatment, two in critical condition. The rally, organized by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), turned catastrophic, prompting widespread grief and calls for accountability.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took swift action, personally calling Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to inquire about the incident and the measures being taken to support victims. Stalin expressed gratitude on X, noting Gandhi’s heartfelt concern and updates on rescue efforts. Gandhi also reached out to TVK president Vijay, offering condolences for the loss of his supporters, according to Congress sources.
Facing mounting criticism, Vijay announced a substantial compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each victim’s family and moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to demand a CBI or independent probe into the tragedy. Karur police have filed a case against TVK office-bearers, citing negligence, while forensic teams are investigating, including at a sewer where some bodies were reportedly found.

The incident has sparked widespread mourning in Karur, with shops and businesses closing as a mark of respect for the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each victim and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The Tamil Nadu government pledged Rs 10 lakh per deceased family and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and BJP also stepped in, offering Rs 1 crore and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, to the families of the deceased.
As investigations continue, the tragedy has raised serious questions about crowd management and safety at political events. Authorities are under pressure to uncover the causes of the stampede and ensure justice for the victims. The nation mourns, and the focus remains on supporting the affected families and preventing such disasters in the future.
