Qatar on Thursday strongly condemned Iran for what it described as a “blatant attack” on the Ras Laffan Industrial City, which caused fires and extensive damage to the LNG facility. In a formal statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the strike a dangerous escalation, a violation of state sovereignty, and a direct threat to national security and regional stability.
The ministry emphasised that despite Qatar’s longstanding policy of neutrality in the ongoing West Asia conflict and its commitment to avoiding escalation, Iran’s actions continue to target Qatar and neighbouring countries, undermining regional security and threatening international peace. Officials said Iran’s continued attacks on energy and civilian facilities push the region toward the brink and risk drawing in nations not directly involved in the conflict.
Qatar also cited United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, stating that the attack violates international law and called on the UN to take necessary measures to prevent further violations and hold those responsible accountable. The ministry reiterated Qatar’s right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which guarantees the right to self-defence, and affirmed that it would take all necessary actions to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and citizens.

As part of its response, Qatar declared Iranian Embassy military and security attaches, along with other staff, as “persona non grata” and instructed them to leave the country within 24 hours. This decision was conveyed through an official note delivered during a meeting between the Director of Protocol at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro, and Iran’s Ambassador to Qatar, Ali Salehabadi.
The ministry clarified that the expulsions were a direct response to repeated Iranian aggression and a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty. Officials warned that continued hostile actions by Iran would be met with additional measures to protect the nation’s national interests.
Reaffirming its stance, Qatar stressed it reserves the right to take all necessary steps, in accordance with international law, to ensure its security, sovereignty, and stability, while calling on the international community to support efforts for regional peace.
