The Punjab government has launched its ambitious Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna, a universal health insurance scheme providing cashless medical treatment up to Rs 10 lakh, with registrations commencing in Tarn Taran and Barnala districts on Tuesday. Hailed as a pioneering initiative, the scheme, which received cabinet approval on July 10, aims to ensure comprehensive healthcare access for all 65 lakh families in the state, regardless of income.
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, addressing reporters in Chandigarh, described the launch as a “big day for Punjab,” emphasizing that the scheme is a landmark step toward universal healthcare. “All 65 lakh families in the state will be entitled to cashless treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh,” he stated. The scheme allows beneficiaries to seek treatment at government hospitals and over 500 empanelled private hospitals across Punjab, ensuring wide accessibility.
Eligibility for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna requires only an Aadhaar card and a voter card, making it inclusive and straightforward. Dr. Singh announced that 132 registration camps will be organized to enroll eligible residents, starting with Tarn Taran and Barnala, with plans to expand statewide. The initiative covers more than 2,000 health procedures and surgeries, ranging from routine treatments to complex medical interventions.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking on Monday, underscored the scheme’s significance, noting that Punjab is the first state in India to offer such extensive health coverage. “This is a revolutionary step to ensure that no family in Punjab is denied quality healthcare due to financial constraints,” Mann said, highlighting the scheme’s role in promoting equitable access to medical services.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs 930 crore to fund the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna, reflecting its commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure. The scheme is expected to alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses, particularly for critical illnesses, and set a precedent for other states to follow. As registration progresses, the initiative is poised to transform healthcare delivery in Punjab, ensuring that every citizen has access to life-saving treatments without financial distress.
